Sustainability
The urban space Bayerischer Bahnhof Leipzig
Green and sustainable
A green oasis, a habitat for people and nature – the district park is located in the heart of the Bayerischer Bahnhof urban space, covering an area of around 6 hectares and running along the striking north-south axis parallel to the Leipzig city tunnel (S-Bahn line).
Preserve, protect, replant
Wherever possible, trees and shrubs that are worth preserving and are part of the existing stock will be integrated into the park design. These are specifically supplemented by extensive new plantings of regionally adapted shrubs and trees.
Along the railroad line that crosses the urban space, the open space, which is valuable in terms of the urban climate, will be preserved and transformed into a district park that can be used in a variety of ways.
The requirements of nature conservation and species protection as well as diverse usage requirements and a network of footpaths and cycle paths connecting the neighborhood are taken into account.
Well built – good climate
The building sector is responsible for around 40% of CO2 emissions. New residential construction is therefore an important lever for climate and environmental protection. This will be taken into account in the planning of the Bayerischer Bahnhof urban space. For example, buildings with modern energy standards are being constructed. The majority of the buildings will have green roofs. These provide natural insulation and a pleasant living climate. Green roofs are also habitats for insects, birds and microorganisms and are important for rainwater retention. By evaporating water through the leaves, green roof surfaces naturally cool the air and ensure a great climate.
Recreational areas and green spaces for all
Walk, cycle, play or talk to each other: This will also be possible in the Bayerischer Bahnhof urban space. A new public district park will be created along the railroad line, which will radiate into the neighboring city districts. It offers the neighborhoods a variety of recreational and exercise opportunities. A north-south footpath and cycle path will be created, as well as east-west crossings for pedestrians and cyclists. Stroll from and to the Portikus
The striking historic building is clearly visible along the visual axis. Young and old alike can reach the landmark from the south through the green district park. When creating the required living space, the opportunity is also taken to specifically unseal areas. This means that rainwater preferably seeps away on the properties. This returns it to the natural water cycle.
Socially sustainable
Social sustainability means creating qualities that benefit everyone. These include daycare centers, schools, areas for play and sport, all in an open urban space. This brings the neighborhoods together and creates a well-mixed, diverse district. Further information can be found in the respective sub-areas.
