Engine shed
Bavarian Railway Station Leipzig
Apart from the portico of the Bayerischer Bahnhof station on Bayrischer Platz, the former engine shed with the turntable is the only building from the original ensemble that has survived the test of time. As part of the construction of the new bridge between Semmelweisstraße and Kurt-Eisner-Straße, the old water tower was demolished in 2009 and the MDR S-Bahn stop was built in front of the listed building along with the Citytunnel. Opposite Media City, the area offers a wide range of uses for culture, business and events.
A hub for media and culture
The site has direct access to the north on Semmelweisstrasse to the
S-Bahn stop MDR and is connected to the south by the new pedestrian/cycle bridge over the extended Steinstraße in the direction of Leipzig’s Südvorstadt.
The immediately adjacent urban areas to the east provide strong impetus through various medical and natural science faculties at Leipzig University. The growing Bio-City Leipzig – internationally renowned for the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, among other things – offers scientists from the region and all over the world attractive opportunities for work and development.
The listed former locomotive shed (sub-area 10) will be retained as a detached solitary structure and will be used primarily for commercial/cultural purposes. To the north of this, a spacious new building for commercial, office and service use is planned.
Area (gross floor area): approx. 13,000 m²
Start of construction planned: The area is currently part of development plan no. 451 “Semmelweisstraße/ An den Tierkliniken”.
